Teguise Lime Kiln Circle

Teguise Lime Kiln Circle, a fairly easy walk just under 4.5 km. Very little climbing, but still affords some lovely panoramic views. Can be completed all off road or with a little amble through the back streets of Teguise.

Directions

Pick up the LZ-10 out of Arrecife for Teguise. Continue through the village turning left onto Calle Galiano (Centro de Salud – Teguise Health Centre). Turn right onto Calle Gadifer de la Salle and park in the rough ground after the football stadium.

There are a whole host of places to eat / coffee & cake stops in Teguise. Why not explore the village and stop as one catches your interest.

The Walk

From the carpark head NE away from the stadium. at the end of the first black picon field on the left is a small path. Follow this path up onto the hillside, past the old water cistern. Cross the La Montaña mountain road dirt track. Look for the path / mountain bike track up onto La Montañeta de Chimida.

Great 360 views here over the entire area. The track continues down and round to the left, past some old water infrastructure. Follow the path down towards the now disused LZ-403 past the Caleras de Teguise (Lime Kilns).

Las Caleras

At the turn of the century these Lime Kilns were at their height. The lime extracted had many uses. In paints for the houses, waterproofing the aljibes (water storage), soap making and water purification.

Just as the path joins C. Guincho yuo have a choice. Follow the road through the back streets of Teguise back to the Football Stadium carpark. Or take the path on the left skirting the picon fields coming out once again onto the La Montaña mountain road dirt track. There is another Horno de cal (Lime Kiln) here. Take the track opposite skirting the picon fields back towards the stadium carpark.
