Teguise – Gadifer de la Salle Walk

This is about a 2 – 3 hour walk depending on breaks and photo stops. It starts from the football stadium carpark in Teguise. The route is well marked and for the most part dirt roads. There is one gentle ascent where the path is quite rocky. Teguise has many bars and restaurants, a couple of my favourites are:

Directions

Follow the LZ-1 out of Arrecife and take the LZ-10 in Tahiche for Teguise. Straight over at the round-a-bout in Teguise and take the fourth left and first right. Park to the right of the Football Stadium.

The Walk

From the Football Stadium car park, head north west, along the Calle Gadifer de la Salle dirt track, past the Teguise High School. After a few minutes, branch left off Calle Gadifer de la Salle. Another few minutes and you need to take the right hand fork, which brings you to the ruins of Ermita de San José.

Just past the ruins cross onto the path which gradually ascends to the ridgeway, re-joining the Calle Gadifer de la Salle dirt track. This is a great spot to stop and admire the views not only back down towards Teguise, but also over towards Guatiza and the eastern coastline.

Once on the top, turn right and follow the track back down off the ridgeway towards Teguise. At the bottom, head directly over the crossroads, following the Calle Gadifer de la Salle dirt track all the way back to the football stadium.

History

Teguise is steeped in history and you can find a wealth of information here – Historia de Teguise. In particular along this walk you might like to check out the history behind the ruins of Ermita de San Jose and the story of Gadifer de la Salle himself.

There is also a growing History section on this website which you may find interesting.
