Both mean &#8220;for&#8221; in English, but they are not interchangeable. To know whether to use por or para, you basically have to think about what purpose the it will be serving. Below you will find the rules and uses for using por and for using para.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;POR&#8221; &#8211; Rules, Uses &amp; Examples<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Spanish, we use the word &#8220;<strong>por<\/strong>&#8221; in the following ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>to express movement along, through, around, by or about<\/strong><br>Example: Dimos una vuelta&nbsp;<strong>por<\/strong>&nbsp;la ciudad. (We took a walk through the city.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>to indicate some sort of exchange<\/strong><br>Gracias&nbsp;<strong>por<\/strong>&nbsp;el regalo. (Thank you for the present.)<br>Te doy 20 euros&nbsp;<strong>por<\/strong>&nbsp;el collar. (I&#8217;ll give you 20 euros for the necklace.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>to indicate a time or duration when something occurs<\/strong><br>Example: Me gusta tomar un caf\u00e9&nbsp;<strong>por<\/strong>&nbsp;la ma\u00f1ana. (I like to have a coffee in the morning.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>to express the cause or reason for an action<\/strong><br>Example: Se engord\u00f3&nbsp;<strong>por<\/strong>&nbsp;falta de ejercicio. (He got fat for lack of exercise.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>to mean &#8220;in favor of&#8221;, &#8220;on behalf of&#8221;, &#8220;supporting&#8221;<\/strong><br>Example: Apuesta&nbsp;<strong>por<\/strong>&nbsp;el candidato dem\u00f3crata.
